What Do You Want To Become?Do you remember what it was like to be a little kid? We had this picture in our heads of what it would be like to be a grown-up and what sort of exciting life we would lead. As we got older, we may have put aside the dreams of being a ballerina or an astronaut and refined our vision of our future with exciting and attainable goals. Then came the "real world" crashing in with career, relationships, kids and mortgages. What ever happened to those exciting ideas we had? Aren't those the things that make all this hard work worthwhile?
So what's your excuse? Too busy, stressed, tired? Too old perhaps? Nonsense! The fact of the matter is that many of us are not very good at time management. We have plenty of "time" each day, we just accidentally squander it in ways that accomplish very little and leave us unsatisfied.
Ready to get out of that rut and begin to feel great about who you are and where you're going? We think so, and we're here to help.
The Secret To SuccessWe see in the news, countless examples of people who have achieved unusual success even though the odds are squarely stacked against them. Oscar Pistorius is an example of a person who became a world class runner despite his being a below-the-knee, double amputee. There are millionaire entrepreneurs who arrived in this country without a penny to their names and unable to read, write or even speak the language. How on Earth did these people succeed in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles? The answer, when you fully understand it, is powerful enough to bring us anything we want. These people were in possession of something that the average person lacks; they all have goals.
The one thing that successful people have in common is a clear, concise idea of what they want to achieve. The passion to reach a goal burns within each of them. It's the first thing they think about when they wake up in the morning, and the last thought in their heads before they fall asleep. Their desire to accomplish this one thing is like a fire in their bellies that gets them past every obstacle and around every hurdle on the road to success.
The reason some of your dreams haven't panned out, is that your mental energy is spread thinly across too many things. From a practical sense, you only have so much mental energy to spend each day. For this process to work, you must learn to focus on one specific thing and then concentrate all of your mental energy there.
Think of your goals as a tiny seeds and your mental energy as a watering can that is filled just once each day. If you were to plant all of your seeds at the same time, you wouldn't have enough water for any of them to really grow into healthy plants. The trick is to choose one seed, plant it carefully and then focus all of your resources on making it grow. The focus you need to accomplish your heart's desire is a clear, concise goal.
Merit Badges: The Brass RingAnyone who was a part of the various scouting programs is familiar with the concept of "merit badges." Although seemingly simplistic, merit programs are astoundingly successful at making new accomplishments and abilities attainable, simple and fun. More important, they teach young people how to set a goal and go after it.
After a single goal (or merit badge in this case) is decided upon, the next step is to create a plan for reaching it. Planning breaks the challenge down into simple, manageable steps. After a healthy dose of encouragement and guidance, the goal is inevitably reached. Finally, the accomplishment is marked with a "token symbol" that serves as a reminder the success and a motivation to set off on the next adventure.
What do you want to do more than anything else? The first step is to define your goal as clearly as you can, with as many specific details as possible. We've made this step easier by creating merit badge programs for some popular goals. We also created a "suggestion box" so you can send us your ideas for new programs. We'll do our best to find experts in the areas you're interested in and help you reach your goal. You will have the support of other members working on similar goals, and before you know it, we'll be sending you your merit badge!
